"Picture yourself when you were five. In fact, dig out a photo of little you at that time and tape it to your mirror. How would you treat her, love her, feed her? How would you nurture her if you were the mother of little you? I bet you would protect her fiercely while giving her space to spread her itty-bitty wings. She’d get naps, healthy food, imagination time, and adventures into the wild. If playground bullies hurt her feelings, you’d hug her tears away and give her perspective. When tantrums or meltdowns turned her into a poltergeist, you’d demand a loving time-out in the naughty chair. From this day forward I want you to extend that same compassion to your adult self."

Rules for Adulthood (A Work in Progress)

  • don’t make people into your anchors. it’s not their fault if you drift out to sea, that’s too much pressure for one (two, three, four) person to handle
  • never tell boys you like them. they are stupid and must be treated with disdain
  • when you’re too afraid to face your face, turn off all the lights and pretend you’re Beyonce
  • don’t let anyone tell you that you are less than whole. not even God. not even books
  • wash your face on a regular basis. your skin deserves a lot more than that. and take your make up before you go to bed. even if it’s just mascara
  • stand up for yourself
  • love
  • don’t tell boys the secrets under covers. don’t tell boys the secrets over the phone. don’t tell boys anything
  • write down those things that bring tears to your eyes and a lump in your throat
  • be patient with yourself
  • never take shit from someone who doesn’t see you as a whole person
  • demand respect. you deserve it. even if you don’t demand it, you deserve it. even if you don’t want it, you deserve it
  • always remember that sinking into the deep blue is scary, but that’s where the mermaids live
  • bad posture doesn’t make you a bad person
  • eat what makes you feel good, do what makes you feel good
  • tell yourself you’re a badass bitch from hell, and don’t let anyone make you feel different
  • take pictures of yourself. take pictures of yourself dressed up and dressed down. do your makeup and laugh at the camera, because who is braver than you?
  • be kind to yourself first. turn your guilt into butterflies and let them go
  • it’s ok to hate your family
  • it’s ok to hate your job
  • it’s ok to hate everything
  • but try not to anyway
